Brian Picklo wants to “bring back the glory” at Mustang.
Picklo will take over as Mustang’s varsity wrestling coach after being approved by the city’s school board Tuesday. The two-time college All-American and former alternate for the United State Olympic judo team will bring a new dynamic to the program as well as high expectations.
“We have a really strong team coming back and we may miss a couple of seniors from this year, but the expectation will be to challenge for state championships. And I think we can do that over the next couple of years,” Picklo explained. “Mustang has such a great tradition with numerous state champions and an Olympic gold medalist. It’s important to get that tradition back and bring back the glory for the program.”
Picklo has spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach for Mustang’s junior high team that recently captured a state title. He previously coached at the University of Oklahoma and was a two-time All-American and Big Ten champion for Michigan State where he wrestled from 1992-1997.
Picklo has also revitalized the city’s little league program, sending multiple youth wrestlers and judo competitors on to national and state championships. He claims the experience coaching and instructing Mustang athletes who are currently working their way through the junior high and high school levels will pay off immediately.
“It’s huge because I know the kids and they know me and my style,” he said. “They’ve been brought up and almost brain-washed into knowing my expectations. We’ve been able to produce multiple champions and now with them entering the middle school and high school ranks it becomes extremely important to help them raise their expectations and get used to the new environment and atmosphere.”
Picklo will also have the opportunity to coach his sons Cameron and Tate. Cameron qualified for the 2016 State Tournament as a freshman and Tate helped lead Mustang’s junior high team to a state title as an eighth-grader.
“It’s kind of a double-edged sword,” Picklo said of coaching his sons. “But having coached them in little league, they’ve already been able to learn that sometimes I’m wearing two hats as a coach and dad. We have a tight-knit family so this is just going to be a special experience being a part of their lives in different ways.”
Picklo’s experience as a judo instructor and his run to an alternate spot on the 2008 Olympic team will also be a useful tool as a high school coach.
“It helps because now the wrestlers can get the best of both worlds,” he explained. “There are different aspects you can bring from judo which will be extremely helpful for our guys. They get to use the tools that most kids don’t see.”
Picklo takes over the program from former coach Will Allen who recently stepped down as wrestling coach, but continues to coach the school’s varsity boys tennis team.
